Gogi and I were more like twins than cousins. Every day was like a new adventure every time we got together. Living across the street from each other, we were inseparable. Each day, there was always a competition to see who would collect who in the morning before we headed of to school....

I have a distinct memory of my mother standing at the doorway of Mrs Ferguson’s classroom.  It was my first day at primary school.  I imagine the look on her face was one of uncertainty, worry even, as her sensitive, introverted son moved on in life.....  

​I have only a few memories of my short and deeply unhappy time at St. Ronan’s Preparatory School.  The first is of me sitting at a front-row desk near the classroom door, picking at the school lunch and hating every half-mouthful .......
